My bike is a 2002 but it only backfires occasionally when I turn it off. It has never done it when I'm riding it. If you are getting a backfire when riding, maybe you had some very bad gasoline. I only use the Plus from 76 or Shell. I figure I get about 115 miles to the tank w/o hitting reserve, so I'm guessing that's pretty good for such a small tank.
